Shockwave Therapy Treatment, Bruntsfield
At Perform Health Co, we use shockwave therapy as Physiotherapists to treat a wide range of injuries & conditions to help get you back pain-free, where other treatments haven’t worked effectively.
A non-invasive evidence-based treatment, shockwave can be excellent for chronic pain and stubborn tendon related pain.
Shockwave therapy at Perform Health Co is always part of a full treatment plan, never just the machine. Here's how your care works.
-
Assessment
A full Physio assessment of your symptoms and history to find the cause of your pain and check whether shockwave is right for you.
-
A clear plan
We explain what's behind your symptoms, how shockwave fits into your treatment and how many sessions you're likely to need.
-
Shockwave treatment
Targeted pressure waves are applied to the affected area, commonly used to help manage stubborn tendon pain. You'll feel a strong tapping sensation.
-
Rehab & strength
Shockwave works best alongside a comprehensive rehab programme, so you'll continue to strengthen to support your recovery throughout.
✓ Plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
✓ Achilles tendon pain
✓ Tennis and golfer's elbow
✓ Patellar tendon pain (jumper's knee)
✓ Calcific shoulder tendon pain
✓ Outer hip pain (gluteal tendinopathy)
Benefits of shockwave therapy
✓ Non-invasive, with no needles, injections or surgery
✓ Quick treatment, usually just a few minutes per session
✓ Little to no downtime, so most people carry on with normal daily activity
✓ An option for stubborn tendon pain that hasn't settled with rest or exercise
✓ May help ease pain and improve function for certain conditions
✓ Works alongside your rehab, not instead of it
✓ Usually a short course of weekly sessions
We Still Measure What Matters with Shockwave Treatments
Objective testing. Meaningful progress.
We use VALD technology to measure strength and range of movement throughout your rehabilitation during your initial assessment.
This allows us to establish an accurate baseline, track changes over time and see where you are progressing during your shockwave therapy treatment sessions.
Rather than just ask “How does it feel today?” it helps us show changes in strength and range of motion and helps guide treatment.
Assess. Measure. Treat. Re-measure. Progress.

Shockwave therapy FAQs
-
Shockwave therapy, also called ESWT, is a non-invasive treatment that delivers high-energy sound waves into injured tendons and soft tissue.
It increases blood flow, triggers the body's natural repair response and helps break down damaged tissue, which makes it effective for stubborn, long-standing pain that has not settled with rest alone.
-
Shockwave is most effective for persistent tendon and soft-tissue problems, including plantar fasciitis, achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, patellar tendinitis, proximal hamstring tendinopathy, shoulder pain and other chronic tendon-related pain.
An assessment confirms whether it is right for your specific condition.
-
You will feel a strong tapping sensation and some discomfort over the treated area, but it is generally well tolerated and only lasts a few minutes.
We adjust the intensity to a level you can manage, and any soreness afterwards usually settles within a day or two.
-
Most conditions need a course of three to six sessions, spaced about a week apart.
The exact number depends on your condition and how you respond, which your physio will discuss at your assessment.
Shockwave is most effective when combined with Physio rehab and treatment.
-
Some people feel relief within a few sessions, but shockwave works by stimulating healing over time, so the fuller benefit often builds over several weeks, including after the course has finished. It is a gradual repair process rather than an instant fix.
Clients that continue their rehab between treatment see the best results.
-
No GP referral is needed. You can book an initial Physio assessment or shockwave assessment directly, online or by phone, and your Physio confirms whether shockwave therapy is the right treatment for your condition before any treatment begins.
