Meet Your Personal Trainer
Steven Cockburn
I have been a personal trainer for 14 years and worked to help a range of clients get stronger, fitter and rehab through injuries and ailments.
Every session is fun, motivating and most importantly specific to your set goals.
Strength & resistance training is safe, effective and essential to ensure we are maintaining strength, lean muscle mass and staying healthy.
Previously I worked as a personal trainer, Crossfit & running coach in London before returning home to Edinburgh in 2021.
After working in the NHS as an MSK Physiotherapist at St John’s hospital I decided to go into private practise so I could offer private Physiotherapy alongside personal training and massage. I love being able to treat and work with clients and have the flexibility to spend more time working towards their goals.

PERSONAL TRAINING
-
Personal training is 1-to-1 coaching designed around you. We’ll work on your strength, fitness, movement and technique based on your goals, experience and any injuries or limitations. Each session is planned with a clear purpose and progresses as you get stronger and more confident.
-
Personal training is suitable for adults of all ages and fitness levels, from complete beginners to experienced gym-goers. Whether you want to get stronger, improve your fitness, return to exercise after an injury or train for a specific goal, your programme will be tailored to you.
-
For most adults, resistance training is an important part of staying strong, healthy and active as we age. It can improve strength, bone health, balance and confidence in everyday movement. You don’t need to be experienced or lift heavy weights to benefit. We’ll help you start at the right level and build from there.
-
The research is clear that resistance training has benefits beyond building muscle. It can help maintain strength, improve balance and physical function as we age, and support bone health. This is particularly important around and after menopause, when changes in hormones can affect bone and muscle health. Research in postmenopausal women suggests resistance training can improve functional capacity and may help maintain or improve bone mineral density.
Strength and balance training are also important for reducing falls and supporting bone health in people with osteoporosis or osteopenia.
Exercise can also help reduce the risk of developing or recurring musculoskeletal pain. For example, research shows that regular exercise can reduce the risk of low back pain and help prevent it from coming back.
The key is finding the right type and level of training for you. You do not need to lift heavy weights or be experienced in the gym to benefit.
-
Your first session will start with a conversation about your goals, training experience, lifestyle and any injuries or limitations. We’ll assess your movement and strength before getting you started with exercises suited to your level.
Sessions are 1-to-1 and practical. You’ll learn how to perform exercises with good technique, understand what you’re doing and why, and gradually build strength and confidence as you progress.
-
Yes. Your training will be guided by an experienced coach who understands proper movement technique, exercise selection and safe spotting techniques. We’ll work within your current abilities and comfort level, adapting exercises, weights and intensity as needed.
The aim is to help you train confidently, learn good technique and progress at a pace that feels right for you.
-
That’s absolutely fine. Your training will be adapted to your injury history, current abilities and any restrictions you may have. With a physiotherapy background, we understand rehabilitation protocols and how to modify exercises so you can train safely and make progress.
If we feel your injury needs further assessment or that personal training is not the right place to start, we’ll be honest with you and recommend a physiotherapy assessment first.
